James F. Schmidt, 85, a resident of Fond du Lac, passed away September 25, 2012 at the Hospice Home of Hope.
He was born August 19, 1927 in Wausau, WI, a son of the late Frederich and Lucille Lapinski Schmidt. Following the death of his mother, Frederich married Marie Kittle, who became his devoted mother.
On July 1, 1950 he married Phyllis Dumdey in Wausau, WI.
James was a graduate of Wausau High School, class of 1946. He was employed as a personal director for Wausau Motor Parts for 18 years. He then accepted a position as an industrial relations manager with Tecumseh Engines, a position he held until his retirement in 1987. James will be remembered as a very kind and gentle man who loved attending his children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events, as they were the joy of his life.
He was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, and the Fond du Lac Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing pool. James was an active volunteer with the Fond du Lac Senior Center Outreach Program and the Senior Dining Program.
Survivors include his loving wife Phyllis, four children, Steven (Kate) Schmidt of Watkins Glenn, NY, Cheryl (Jack) Yoder of Chico, CA, Jill (Frank) Popp of New Holstein, WI, and Mark (Sharon) Schmidt of New Holstein, six grandchildren, Sean (Anna) and Seth (Esther) Yoder, Sarah (Ryan) Nielson, Michael (Gina) and Marc Popp, Scott (Amy) Schmidt, five great-grandchildren, Eli, Connor, Amaya, Parker and Kourtney. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Corey James Schmidt, five brothers, Conrad, Kenneth, Joseph, Arnold and Tony, three sisters, Marie, Helen and Evelyn.
Visitation: The family will receive relatives and friends at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 535 Stow Street, Fond du Lac, on Friday September 28, 2012 from 3:00 PM to 5:45 PM.
Services: Funeral services will follow visitation at 6:00 PM. Rev. Ted Drewsen will officiate. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Ledgeview Memorial Park.
Memorials in his name may be directed to the Hospice Home of Hope or Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
